Marine Theory Courses

VHF/SRC Short Range Certificate-radio Operators Qualification (ILA Funding Available)
Duration: 1 Day
The Certificate authorises the holder to use radiotelephone on the VHF international frequencies of the Maritime mobile band including channel 70 for digital selective calling. Vessels fitted with a DSC/VHF can only be operated by persons holding this certificate.

Marine Operators Vocational Course
Duration: Up to 10 days
Who is it for: High School pupils, school leavers, people generally interested in a Marine career.
What does it offer: The course will provide the candidate with various certificates which would give him/her a good starting point to enter a career path into the Marine industry.
The course will consist of 4 different units:

  • Seamanship:
    • Basic boat handling
    • Nautical terminology, rules of the road
    • Rope work, mooring and berths
    • Practical boat handling (this will include a level 2 powerboat certificate)
  • Personal protection and safety:
    • Sea survival (certified)
    • First aid (certified)
  • Distress and VHF communication:
    • Use of Marine radios will be taught, and the pupil will be qualified to operate a Marine VHF Radio (certificated)
  • Basic engineering:
    • Basic working of engines
    • Troubleshooting
    • Engine bleeding

Chartwork Course
Duration: 1 Day
This course will provide you with the chart work knowledge, necessary to get up to the standard needed for the Advanced Powerboat certificate, and/or for the Commercial Endorsement.
Knowledge Required: Up to Powerboat Level 2 chart work.
Fee: £50

Day Skipper Shorebased
Duration: 5 Days
This is an elementary course in basic seamanship, navigation and meteorology, suitable for beginners and people with little experience in cruising yachts and motor cruisers.
Suggested Experience: Some practical sailing experience.

Fee: £260 (Charts and publications included.)

Coastal Skipper Shorebased
Duration: 7 Days
This is a more advanced course in navigation and meteorology. It will take the course applicant up to the theory knowledge required for Coastal Skipper and Yacht master Practical Examination.
